The Legendary Inns of Newport is a distinguished collection of luxury Inns. Set in refined and elegant historic surroundings, these unique properties combine the warmth and intimacy found in a classic American Bed and Breakfast with the finest amenities and services of a small luxury European hotel. Our mission quite simply is to provide an exceptional guest experience.
The Legendary Inns was started in 1989 with Cliffside Inn, the former home and Victorian manor house of Newport artist Beatrice Turner. Company founder, the late Winthrop P. Baker Jr., had a vision at the time for creating a new luxury hospitality category. The vision caught on quickly with both guests and the media -- and the hospitality industry as well.
It is embodied today as it was then, by individual design and decoration throughout graceful historic properties, set in special locations that reflect the unique heritage of Newport. Cliffside, for instance, grandly sits in a quiet residential neighborhood above the Atlantic Ocean and the acclaimed Cliff Walk. Legendary hallmarks include a magical mix of authenticity with today's most luxurious appointments, fine period antiques, one-of-a-kind architectural treasures, artwork, grand beds, fine linens, fireplaces, exotic bathing salons with whirlpools and steam baths, iPod electronics, nationally-acclaimed afternoon tea, warm hospitality and personal service. Our goal then as now -- exceptional guest experiences.
Cliffside Inn rose to prominence as one of the top Inns in America, and the most written-about Inn in New England. The flagship property remains the largest of the collection with 16 guest quarters. It also serves as a "living museum" for Beatrice Turner and her artwork.
Adele Turner Inn (named for Beatrice's mother) opened in 2000, after an extensive, top-to-bottom million-dollar renovation of an existing Bed and Breakfast. Located on the first gas-lit street in America, the Inn is listed on the National Historic Register and features 27 architecturally distinctive round top windows through-out its three floors. It sits quietly nestled in the Historic Hill section of Newport, just up the hill from downtown. The Inn has 13 guest chambers and showcases one of Newport's most unique guest quarters, the Harborview Spa, which has its own private roof top deck with hot tub, and panoramic views of Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay.
The most recent member of the Legendary Inns group is Abigail Stoneman Inn. Opened in 2002, it struck a unique chord with guests and the media alike, with its very personal style of luxury and hospitality. With only five guest quarters (three suites and two state rooms) it is considerably smaller than the other Inns -- by design.

"Like nowhere else," is how we often hear the Abigail experience described. We can't think of a better way of putting it. It really is, like nowhere else.
In addition to a private tearoom for two, and Rhode Island's only water bar, guests enjoy four one-of-a-kind luxury amenities: the Dreamy Night Pillow Menu with its 15 choices; the Renewal Bath Bar soap collection with 20 of the world's finest soaps, skincare and spa products; Connoisseur Collection Tea Menu featuring the world's most prized teas; and the James Finch Water Bar that features two-dozen international still and sparkling bottled waters.
The Legendary Inns of Newport is now headed by Winthrop P. Baker III, President of the group. He is the oldest son of the late founder and a former television executive and Silicon Valley entrepeneur.
