Adele's "Luxurious Amenities & Intriguing History" Featured
Northshore magazine came looking for the best of Newport and found Adele Turner Inn combined luxury, history, architecture and wine into the perfect pairing. "We chose Adele Turner Inn for its interesting architectural elements (tall arched windows, inviting porch and rooftop deck), luxurious amenities (daily wine and food pairings, fine linens) and intrgiuing hisitory (Adele Turner was mother of Beatrice Turner, an eccentric Newport artist who painted more than 1,000 self portraits). All rooms have fireplaces, period antiques, private baths, and media centers." See all Adele rooms. Wine event details. |

"She Was a Knockout" -- Newport's Mystery Artist Studied
Writer and commentator Joseph Citro, a well known chronicler of New England lore and legend, found the mystery of artist Beatrice Turner well worthy of inclusion in his latest strange-but-true book about New England, Weird New England, Your Travel Guide to New England's Local Legends and Best Kept Secrets. "The story of Beatrice Turner is the stuff of legend, a classic mystery that haunts the imagination... Though she is gone now, you can still see her house, called Cliffside, a meticulously restored Victorian delight," writes Citro. "There is something gothic about her life, something tragic about her passing, and something irrestible about her afterlife." |

The Art of Summer Weekends . . . Artful Discovery in Newport
In looking for special places that combine the best of the arts -- both cultural and musical -- with the best luxury destinations, Washington Spaces magazine picked Cliffside Inn and Newport as one of its top three. "Head seaside to Newport where you can get cozy in the chic Cliffside Inn," reports the July edition of the architectural and art magazine. "Art lovers can discover Newport from the home of legendary artist Beatrice Turner, whose self-portraits adorn the walls of this luxury B&B. "Legendary Pampering and Luxury Top The Menu"
Inside Philadelphia magazine, in its Summer 2005 Travel Issue, profiled the Legendary Inns of Newport group with a focus on Abigail Stoneman Inn. "Pampering is the only , as well as the ultimate, goal," writes Editor Robert Leiter. "At one point, my wife looked over at me and said she hadn't seen me look so relaxed in years." Of the Legendary Inns trio: "These 'legendary' establishments put pampering and luxury at the top of the menu... They feature charms that are suited to the warm or cold months, whether that means time spent by the fire or tea taken out on the front lawn at Abigail Stoneman and Adele Turner or on the expansive porch at Cliffside." Leiter also notes the unique nature of the daily wine tasting events at the Adele Turner. "Like Cliffside's tea, it's an event not to be missed." (Top) |

Newport's "Sumptuous
Victorian" Cliffside Inn
In an article focusing on historic
luxury traveling and antiquing in New England, BBC Homes&
Antiques May 2004 magazine showcased Cliffside Inn as its
only property in Rhode Island. "To rent a summer retreat
rather than build your own cottage was deeply unfashionable
in the Gilded Age, but a century on, you can stay in those very
same grand cottages... The celebrated Cliffside Inn, which belonged
to artist Beatrice Turner, is one such place. Curiously, Beatrice
once had the entire house painted black and only went out in
Victorian dress. But the quirkiness of the accommodation--now
no longer black but stuffed with self portraits of this wealthy
beauty--adds much to its character. Here you can enjoy a traditional
tea in a sumptuous Victorian parlour or imbibe the sea air on
the vast wrap around porch with its wicker chairs." See

Country Living Names Adele Turner
"Inn of The Month"
"Step
into the warmth of the Adele Turner Inn, in Newport, R.I., where
hot cider, a crackling fire, and festive holiday decorations
await your arrival. Named for the mother of local Victorian
artist Beatrice Turner, the inn--built in 1855 on the country's
first gas-lit street--offers 13 inviting rooms. Fireplaces in
every room allow travelers to warm their toes after a day of
touring mansions (many decked out in period-style decorations)
that once housed the likes of the Vanderbilts and the Astors,
accompanying Santa on a train ride along Narragansett Bay,
or browsing holiday crafts shows, all part of the Christmas
in Newport celebration. However you spend your day, head back
to the inn for high tea: a dazzling affair of homemade pastries,
scones, and savories served on antique china and silver" (View

Abigail
Named Best Grown-Up Getaway in Rhode Island
"Named after Newport's first woman
inn owner, the Abigail Stoneman Inn is small--just three suites
and two rooms--and definitely luxe. Each
bedroom has a king-size bed, scarcely visible under all the
pillows, as well as its own fireplace, and every marble bathroom
also features a Jacuzzi big enough for two. Ask
for the secluded Above and Beyond suite, which lives up to its
name and occupies the entire gabled third floor. Best of
all, though, is the daily Duchess of Bedford tea, a white-linen-covered
table groaning with raisin scones, and double cream, fruit tarts,
German chocolate cake, finger sandwiches and a wide selection
of tea." See

Amenities are Likely Unlike Any You've Ever Seen
Hartford
Magazine Editor Suzanne LaBranche singled out Abigail Stoneman
Inn in the July issue for the Trip of the Month. "If you've
been to Newport in recent years, you've heard words like
'sumptuous,' 'luxurious,''aristocratic,' and 'irresistable'
used to describe Cliffside Inn and Adele Turner Inn. Abigail
Stoneman Inn, if you can imagine, is a cut above." Describing
the four one-of-a-kind amenities, the pillow menu, bathing experience
menu, water and tea menus, she writes, "The amenities are
likely unlike any you've ever seen." About the
acclaimed afternoon tea, "The glorious Duchess of Bedford-style
spread served each afternoon in the parlor is really quite something
to behold." LaBranche
summed up her experience: "It's the detailed touches of
romance and beauty, luxury and serendipity that makes the Abigail
Stoneman Inn so memorable." See

Frommer's Only 3-Star Luxury
Inn in Newport |
 |

Cliffside Inn
Assuming that money is no object, this
tops the list of places to stay in Newport. It is difficult
to imagine what further improvements might be made here, although
the tinkering and upgrading continues. Most of the 16 units
have whirlpool baths, and all now have at least one working
fireplace.
A new lower-level suite in the satellite Seaview Cottage has
a bathroom that has to been seen: the Jacuzzi tub features both
standard and hand-held showerheads, eight spray nozzles, and
a built-in TV and CD player! Nightly turndown service, hair
dryers, and terry-cloth robes are provided. Antiques and admirable
reproductions are generously deployed, including Eastlake and
Tiffany originals and Victorian
fancies that include (room no. 11) an amusing "birdcage"
shower from 1890. A
favorite unit is the Garden Suite, a duplex with private garden
and a big double bath with radiant heat beneath the Peruvian
tile floors. Coffee, juice, and the newspaper of your choice
are delivered to your room even before the full breakfast. This
is a no-smoking property. See
